Description

Sheffield Knives F&S Commando Dagger 1940 1st Pattern Spare Sheath With Stitch Tabs

The Fairbairn–Sykes commando knife is a double-edged fighting knife resembling a dagger with a fencing foil style grip. It was developed by William Fairbairn and Eric Sykes in Shanghai based on ideas that the two men had while serving on the Shanghai Municipal Police in China before World War II.

Spare Sheath Only.
The F&S commando knife was made famous during World War II when issued to British Commandos, the Airborne Forces, the SAS and many other units, especially for the Normandy landings in June 1944. With an acutely tapered and sharply pointed blade, the F-&S commando knife is frequently described as a stiletto design optimised for thrusting, although the F&S knife was  used to inflict slash cuts upon an enemy when its cutting edges were  sharpened by the soldier.  The Wilkinson Sword Company made the knife with minor pommel and grip design variations.

Sheffield Knives

Sheffield Knives: A Legacy of Craftsmanship. The rise of Sheffield as a center for knife-making was fueled by the city’s proximity to high-quality raw materials, including locally sourced steel and abundant water power from its rivers. By the 18th century, the city's knife-making expertise had reached new heights, and by the 19th century, it was home to some of the most prestigious cutlery manufacturers. The hallmark of Sheffield knives was their superior steel, advanced production techniques, and meticulous craftsmanship, which made them highly sought after.

Types of Sheffield Knives

Sheffield's legacy continues to this day, with manufacturers still producing a wide variety of knives designed for both practical and collectible purposes. Some of the most well-known types of knives crafted in Sheffield include:

Traditional Folding Knives: Known for their compact design and smooth action, these knives are often used for everyday carry and outdoor activities.

Fixed Blade Knives: These knives, including hunting knives, survival knives, and military-grade blades like the Sheffield Commando Dagger, are built for durability and reliability in tough environments. Kitchen Cutlery: Sheffield has long been a leader in the production of high-quality kitchen knives, such as chef’s knives, paring knives, and carving knives, trusted by both professionals and home cooks alike. Collectors' Knives: Sheffield also produces limited edition and commemorative knives, highly prized by collectors for their heritage and craftsmanship.
